Monarch and Fairy-Tale King
King Ludwig II, born in 1845 at Nymphenburg Palace, was a fervent advocate of an independent Kingdom of Bavaria. His love for the fine arts, his creative energy and his entirely non-military, peace-loving nature made him the embodiment of a better world.
His royal buildings house countless masterpieces of craftsmanship and painting, as well as pioneering technical achievements. Under circumstances that have never been fully clarified, King Ludwig II met his death in Lake Starnberg in 1886. With that, the legend of King Ludwig II was finally born.

Admirer of the Royal Bavarian Court Cuisine
King Ludwig II was a connoisseur and admirer of fine Bavarian cuisine. Many of his personal menus bear witness to sophisticated, high-quality meals. As a refined aesthete, he worked with tremendous willpower to realise his high standards in the culinary realm as well.
Herrenchiemsee Palace, which is situated not far from LEIMER’s headquarter, was designed as a private residence for King Ludwig II. The sumptuous dining room was fitted with its innovative food lift, the ‘Wishing Table’.

Architect of opulent dreams
King Ludwig II’s buildings transformed the Bavarian cultural landscape. The foundation stone for the castle, which was later to become world-famous as Neuschwanstein, was laid in 1869. As early as 1884, following the completion of the first section of the castle – which had been built using the most modern construction methods – King Ludwig II planned to make Neuschwanstein his principal residence. In fact, until his untimely death, he spent a mere 172 days at his beloved ‘Swan Castle’.
King Ludwig II’s name will forever be associated with his two other Bavarian castles, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. Linderhof Castle, built entirely in the style of French absolutism, boasts truly fairy-tale-like details. With Herrenchiemsee, King Ludwig sought to realise his own version of Versailles.
